” Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in day out.” – Robert collier. I know when we hear anything to do with habbits and success in the same sentence we start to think about millionaires and those popular successful people that are always referred to. Today I’m not going to talk about that kind of success. I just mean success as in the status of having achieved and accomplished a goal.
So what does success mean to you ?
You should be able to answer this question so that you pursue the right version of success so that after you achieve the goal you feel good about your efforts and are fulfilled. To be successful you really need to have equal clarity on what it means to really succeed.. Setting your goals should be about you and what you desire in life, it shouldn’t be for someone else or based on what someone wants for you.
Before we get to the success habits let me just remind you what success isn’t so that we are on the same page. Success is not solely about acquiring wealth, the so called ” relationship goals” , being an influencer or having a business. Basically its not about all that social media life or that celebrity status. If you pursue the wrong kind of success you will be miserable. There are so many rich people out there who are miserable because they thought amassing a lot of wealth would fulfil them or make them happy.
Waking up early is a success habit
Getting up early is not easy. Most of us would rather hit that snooze button and sleep in, especially in these quarantine, social distancing times of covid- 19. However, getting up early actually improves your health. Research shows that you will be less likely to suffer from mental illnesses like depression if you wake up early everyday. Waking up early sets you up for success in that you will have more hours on your hands to be more productive. Decide on 3 or 4 goals you would want to achieve in the morning before you start your normal day.
Accomplishing these first tasks makes you want to do more and by day end you will find that you would have done more than what you normally do on a typical day. Sometimes you may find yourself having a few hours left in your day for some me time. I wake up at 5.30 am, do my morning prayer and devotion then workout. After that I organize my to do list or catch up on my emails and news.
Investing in yourself is a success habit
Investing in ourselves is something we seldom take as a high priority. often times it’s because we feel that investing in ourselves requires time, money, effort and energy we don’t have. So we shelve it in the hopes of doing it later. But then when will this ” later” come? Investing in yourself can be as simple as reading a book everyday, watching an educational documentary or enrolling into an art class. Truth is many people don’t see the value in that. To them it’s like wasting time ” I can’t waste my afternoon on a book” kind of mentality.
Investing in yourself is one of success habits that enriches your life. Whether its learning a new skill or language, reading books, joining a gym you will be rewarded by that sense of accomplishment, confidence, and overall growth. You open yourself up for more opportunities, get to lean important lessons that can help you in your career and life in general.
Spend time with people who inspire you
” Your friends should motivate and inspire you. Your circle should be well rounded and supportive. Keep it tight. Quality over quantity, always.” Such a common yet powerful statement. Do the people in your circle inspire you? Are they productive people? Do they support you? Sorround yourself with people who want to see you grow. Take time to choose who you want to spend your time with. Be quick to cut off and walk away from toxic and negative people. If you are looking to establish a circle of highly motivated people that inspire you, join groups, activites or go to places frequented by people you find inspirational and network with them. Keep in touch and develop a friendship. Some success habits are learned from our circle.
Learning from your mistakes as a success habit
Mistakes are portals of discovery. They are part of growth and development. It’s allowed to make as many mistakes as possible. It shows that you are trying and doing something about your situation. Just be sure to Iearn from your mistakes and move on. Don’t dwell on them. Like they say there is no use crying over spilt milk. When something doesn’t work out, be it a business, relationship or friendship, do an assement, find out where things or you went wong and take note of the lessons learned. Learn from them and make corrections for future success. Next time you will do better and accomplish that goal. Focus on the positives and avoid getting stuck on the past.
Keep a To Do List
Many people underestimate the value of a To do list. A to do list helps you to plan your day. Planning in advance is important. Remember if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. Being productive requires good time management and organisation skills. Keeping a to do list has just the same effect as setting a goal. It gives you direction. Everything you need to do Is readily available and accessible therefore you won’t get distracted. Ticking off completed tasks is motivating. Give to do lists a go and see how much you accomplish in a day.
